FWC arrests men for possessing goliath grouper December 9, 2008 Contact: Gabriella B. Ferraro, 772-215-9459; or Officer Bobby Dube, 305-684-8703 Investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have cited two Key West men for possessing goliath grouper, a protected fish. On Nov. 26, FWC investigators were conducting surveillance of the dock area behind #1 Arbutus Street in Key West. The surveillance was in response to reports of men spearfishing and returning with goliath grouper. The harvest of goliath grouper from Florida waters has been prohibited for many years. Investigators observed the men return to the dock with spear guns and coolers. After questioning the men, investigators checked their coolers and found five juvenile goliath grouper, each measuring 20 to 30 inches in length. Investigators revived the fish and released them to the water. The fish survived because their vital organs were not damaged. "We were able to save the fish, and return them alive," said Investigator John Brown. "We were pleased that the outcome was positive." The men, Eric S. Blatch, DOB 8/29/68, and Brian T. Knowles, DOB 10/25/60, were each charged with possessing goliath grouper, a misdemeanor, and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island. |
