1999 marked the 40th anniversary of the release of writer and biologist Jean Craighead George's classic tale My Side of the Mountain, the story of a boy, Sam Gribley, and a peregrine falcon (Frightful) surviving on a mountain together. The story continued in the sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, when the falcon was returned to the wild. In a third book, Frightful's Mountain, released in 1999, readers learn about the real-life dangers that face peregrine falcons, told from Frightful's perspective.
