Keep a Family Nature Journal

One of the best reasons for keeping a nature journal is to hone observation skills, a process that adds rich detail to our lives and keeps us in touch with seasonal events. A family nature journal requires only eyes, paper and pencil. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Any notebook will do as long as it will accommodate 365 days.
  • Entries can be brief - even one or two sentences will do.
  • Remain positive and encourage participation, by asking: "Did anyone see anything interesting today?" - I saw a crow trying to eat a dead squirrel on the road. "Any smells?" - The smell of rain on hot pavement. "Peculiar sounds?" - The cicadas have started to sing.
  • Be supportive of all entries regardless of spelling or content.
  • Its okay to stop occasionally. One way to keep on task with journaling is to commit to writing at least once a month.  You can help yourself do this by reflecting on what that month reminds you of ecologically. What birds are migrating, or what sounds do you hear at night, or what colors or smells impress you this time of year?
  • Take the time occasionally to look back at what you've written to motivate you to write more.
