Pond Life - Microscopic Students will explore the aquatic ecosystem using dip nets and seines in the shallow waters of Joe Budd Pond. Aquatic insects, minnows and plants will be collected by students and examined under stereoscopes and microscopes. Students will identify and classify both plant and animal species using field guides and handouts. The aquatic food chain will be discussed using samples of organisms found by students and displays in education center. (Grades 4-12)
Pond Life - Macroscopic
Organisms living in and around Joe Budd Pond will be examined. Students will be given collection apparatus and be allowed to gather both plants and animals from the pond's banks. Field guides and handouts will be used to identify organisms. (Grades 1-5) Wetland Scavenger Hunt Students will search for model animals hidden along the wetland nature trail. Using a scavenger hunt handout, students will list habitat where each was found and a description of the animal's appearance. Each animal will then be placed in a food chain and be linked together to explain a wetland food web. (Grades 1-4) Wetland Survey
Students will explore a wetland environment by hiking through a cypress swamp and examining the native plant and animal life. Collection equipment will be used by students to provide a close-up look at creatures found along the trail. Field guides and handouts will be used to identify organisms. (Grades 4-12) Fishing Techniques Students will be given instructions and hands-on practice in all aspects of fishing, from rigging a rod and reel to taking fish off the hook. Oversized hooks and line will be used to teach knot tying during the fishing preparation stage. After students have mastered knots, time will be spent learning to cast. Floating rings will act as targets for casters and proper technique for different styles of fishing will be taught. This activity is ideal for students who have never had fishing experience or for students who wish to enhance their fishing skills. Radica's Bassin' Game provides an alternative for rainy days (all ages). Fish Identification
Species of freshwater fish will be placed in 200-gallon aquarium and examined for distinguishing characteristics and individual adaptations. Species will include bluegill, readear sunfish, black crappie, bowfin, channel catfish, bullhead catfish, largemouth bass, sucker, shad and longnose gar. Students will be given a close-up view of each species to show individual characteristics and distinctions. Eating preferences, behavior and living environments of each species will be discussed allowing students to differentiate species and recognize adaptations. The Kid's Fishing Book describing these freshwater fish will be given to each student for identification of species. (all ages) Fish Dissection
Various species of fish, equipment and detailed instruction will be provided for dissection, stomach content analysis and ageing. Students will be responsible for finding major organs, determining sex and approximate age of fish. The stomach pouch will also be opened and examined to determine diet of specific species. Results will be shared with class to show eating preferences. (Grades 5-12) |
