WOMEN IN FISHING
Fishing is an American tradition which has provided tremendous enjoyment and
stress release for millions of Americans of very diverse backgrounds, both male
and female, young and old, fit and not-so-fit. Yet in the minds of many it
is something for the "guys" to do. Recognizing that fishing provides as
much enjoyment for women of all ages either singularly, with other females, or
as part of a family activity, we want to provide a set of specific resources to
help women of all ages learn how to enjoy freshwater fishing in Florida and to
hone their skills.
The links above we believe will be helpful. Becoming an
Outdoor Woman is part of a national program, which has classes in Florida that
teach not only fishing skills, but also boating, hunting and camping and the
individual can select the components they wish to focus on. The Equal
Opportunity Section is a group of professionals within the American Fisheries
Society which primarily helps underrepresented fisheries professionals.
Ladies Let's Go Fishing is a home bred fishing program that currently has women
teach women how to fish in a low pressure, fun-filled environment, currently it
is primarily for saltwater angling. The fishing tips section provides lots
of information on what to fish for, where to find them and the gear to use.
The links page takes you to other pages off of our web site which may further
enhance your fishing experience, including links to women's tournament groups.
"I almost hate to call it
fishing. I'd rather call it water treatment. Yes, it's about the line
and these wild flashes of light you see in the stream, but it's
really the water that we go to and the water we've always gone to.
For some kind of solace, for understanding, for cleansing, for
rebirth. I think we're drawn primarily by the water and then by the
wild things that inhabit it. We need the power of the ocean and the
power of a small stream. When you became more familiar with the
creatures that inhabit these bodies of water, you are drawn to see
them, to connect somehow. But it starts with the water."-- Margot Page,
quoted in "Fly-Fishing for Sharks: An American Journey" (Simon &
Schuster)

noticed quite a large increase in the amount of female anglers
gathering on banks and tackling up. This I feel to be a great
