Freshwater turtle workshops scheduled

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has scheduled two public workshops to receive comments regarding proposed changes to freshwater turtle harvest rules.

The workshops are in response to concerns over increasing demand for Florida turtles amid tighter harvest restrictions in other states. Proposed rules would restrict individuals to a five-turtle-per-day bag limit, except for species that already have more-restrictive limits.

The FWC encourages interested persons to participate in the workshops, which will take place as follows:

Sept. 11, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Okeechobee County Civic Center
1750 U.S. 98 North
Okeechobee

Sept. 12, 9 a.m. – noon
FWC Southwest Region office
3900 Drane Field Rd.
Lakeland

Anyone requiring special accommodations to participate in the workshops should advise the FWC at least five days prior to the workshop by calling 850-488-6411.  If you are hearing- or speech-impaired, contact the FWC using the Florida Relay Service at 1-800-955-8771 (TDD) or 1-800-955-8770 (voice).
